Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) - Star Labelling Approval
The Standards & Labelling (S&L) Programme of BEE is one of the major thrust areas of BEE. It aims at providing the consumer with an informed choice about the energy saving and thereby the cost saving potential of the relevant marketed product. The scheme was launched by the Hon'ble Minister of Power in May,2006. The scheme targets display of energy performance labels on high-energy end use equipment & appliances and lays down minimum energy performance standards.
The Scheme cover star labelling program for many appliances and out of which some are now under mandatory regime where Star labelling on them is now mandated by law. S&L in India works on a model in which the applicant provides information related to energy efficiency of the product on the label. A star rating, ranging from 1 to 5 in the ascending order of energy efficiency is provided to products registered with the Bureau. An endorsement label is also provided for some products.
The BEE Schedules for each notified product prescribe limits on the energy consumption (or minimum levels of the energy efficiency) of manufactured products and well-defined test protocols whereas the label describes energy performance (in the form of energy use, efficiency or energy cost) to give consumers the necessary information to make informed purchase. Higher star rating means higher energy saving. The energy efficiency requirements for each product are periodically ratchet up to enhance efficiency levels of products available in the market. Those who cannot meet the elevated standards are required to downgrade their product labels
