CERTIFICATION SCHEMES
India has a comprehensive certification and regulatory framework to ensure that products placed on the market meet prescribed standards for safety, quality, performance, energy efficiency, and environmental sustainability. These certification schemes play a critical role in protecting consumers, promoting fair trade practices, facilitating market access, and supporting compliance with national regulations.
The Indian conformity assessment ecosystem comprises a combination of mandatory certifications, registration-based approvals, self-declaration mechanisms, and sector-specific regulatory requirements.
Many of the National Regulations are directly controlled and administered by respective Nodal Ministries. However, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) being the country's National Standards Body also administers key certification programs. The BIS Certifications becomes mandatory only when notified by a Quality Control Order from the respective regulators in India. Further, regulators do decide upon the particulars type of certification program to be implemented in consultation with their respective stakeholders.
Prominent Certification Schemes of BIS include:
- ISI Mark Certification Scheme
- Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS)
- Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme (FMCS)
- Hallmarking
Many Ministries and regulators in India use the BIS Act to notify mandatory compliance to Indian Standards for products under their respective domains.
Typical examples include:
- Electronics Goods under Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY)
- Solar Products under Ministry of New and Renewable Energy Sources (MNRE)
- Chemicals by Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals
- Cotton Bales by Ministry of Textiles
- Electrical Appliances and Various Tools by Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade
