DGMS (Directorate General of Mines Safety) Approvals
Directorate General of Mines Safety, DGMS in short, is the Regulatory Agency under the Ministry of labour and employment, Government of India in matters pertaining to occupational safety, health and welfare of persons employed in mines (Coal, Metalliferous and oil-mines). The organization has its headquarters at Dhanbad (Jharkhand) and is headed by Director-General of Mines Safety.
DGMS accords approval of equipment, machinery, apparatuses, appliances and other materials used in Coal, Metal and Oil Mines. The typical equipment domain covers:
- Env monitoring Instruments and Devices
- Rescue Apparatus
- Personal protective Equipment
- Machines and equipment for Mining Operations
- Explosives and Accessories
- Safety material for underground mines
- Supports and accessories for roof/side support
- Dust suppression/ prevention systems
- Lights / Luminaires etc.

- Where Indian standards exist and are not adopted from IEC, the manufacturer should have ISI Mark License for the product.
- Where Indian standards do not exist or exist but are adopted from IEC, the manufacturer should hold IECEx or ATEx for the product
- Product qualifying to latest Indian/IEC/ European EN Standards
- Up-to-date Factory inspection of the manufacturing unit
- Authorised Local Representative for Overseas Manufacturers
- Provisions for Installation and After-sales support
- Lab certified drawings
- Copy of test reports from NABL labs or Govt. labs with verdict for testing done in India, or copies of IECEx / ATEx Test Reports
Procedure
- Testing of prototype as per Standards / DGMS Protocol preferably from a single test house
- Application
- For Indian manufacturers, Factory Inspection by DGMS
- Inspection of Physical Sample
- Filed Trail Permission (3 months to 1 year)
- Monitoring of Field Trial
- Performance Report based on Field Trail
- Regular Approval
- Marking Instructions with Unique Number
- For Imported Equipment Digitally signed Soft Copy of Application with all documents is accepted
